Stories of
Christ-Like Listening

DIANE MARIE CAREY

From the Head to the Heart

Actor, singer, producer and director

“It went from something in my head to something in my heart and awareness.”

Diane Marie Carey entered Christ-Like Listening with a belief already central to her faith: God dwells within every person. She understood that truth intellectually. What changed through the formation was her capacity to recognize it within an actual encounter.

When Diane became still and prepared herself to listen, she found that she could begin to hear and see the presence of God within the person before her. The belief moved from the head to the heart. It became an awareness rather than an abstract principle—a spiritual recognition that shaped how she received another human being in that particular moment.

Diane considers this work worth the time, energy and financial investment because relationships are among the most important realities of human life. Simply being connected to other people does not automatically produce deep or truthful relationships. The way we listen can make those relationships more meaningful. It can create greater peace, hope and light by allowing people to meet beyond the surface level of conversation.

Christ-Like Listening does not leave that desire at the level of inspiration. Diane appreciated that the formation provides maps, skills, books and teaching. Participants learn a process, practise it and gradually become more comfortable using it. Through repeated experience in small groups, the practice can begin to feel natural and carry over into family life, friendship, parish community and other relationships.

For Diane, this was not merely a general hope. She came with her closest relationships in mind, including her relationship with her partner and her children. Those primary relationships can also be the most challenging because they contain history, expectations and familiar patterns of responding. She believes the formation will help those relationships become better and stronger by changing the quality of presence she brings to them.

At the same time, Diane's vision expanded beyond her family. Christ-Like Listening helped her see a wider possibility for the Church and for relationships among brothers and sisters in Christ. A community capable of listening well can become a community in which people are less isolated, differences are met with greater patience and faith becomes visible through the way people receive one another.

The experience became larger than Diane initially expected. She came seeking help for particular relationships and discovered a vision of listening that touches personal growth, spiritual life and the shared life of the Church.

Her story reminds us that many essential truths of faith can remain in the mind without fully shaping our encounters. Christ-Like Listening helped Diane bridge that distance. The conviction that God is present in every person became a way of seeing, hearing and responding. That movement—from belief to awareness, and from awareness to practice—gave her renewed hope for the relationships that matter most.
