Christ-Like Listening

Seeing Scripture With New Eyes

“It takes you so much deeper into your faith.”

Ken Nauss describes Christ-Like Listening as the kind of formation he wishes he had received years earlier. Its importance became clear to him because it did more than offer general encouragement to be kind or attentive. It invited him to examine the way Jesus encountered people and to allow that pattern to challenge his own conversations.

The seminar led Ken back to Scripture. As he reflected upon Christ's encounters, he began looking more carefully at how Jesus spoke, listened and responded to the person before him. Familiar passages offered new insight when considered through the question of listening. What had always been present in the Gospel became more visible and practical.

This reflection also encouraged Ken to examine how he personally meets other people: how he talks, how he listens and what kind of encounter he creates. Listening like Christ is not simply remaining silent while another person speaks. It involves the quality of attention, the respect offered to the person's experience and the willingness to enter a conversation without immediately making oneself the centre.

Ken was particularly struck by the relationship between the way Jesus encountered people more than two thousand years ago and what current cognitive science continues to discover about human attention, communication and connection. For him, this did not reduce the Gospel to psychology. Instead, it showed how deeply Christ's way of meeting people corresponds to the truth of the human person.

The experience was eye-opening even for someone who had lived as a Christian for many years. Long familiarity with the faith does not mean there is nothing more to discover. The seminar revealed aspects of encounter and relationship that can easily remain unnoticed, even when a person knows Scripture and has participated in Christian life for decades.

Ken's testimony is an invitation to return to the Gospel with a practical question: when Jesus met another person, what did his presence communicate? How did he create space? How did he respond to what was said and to what remained unspoken? What might change if Christians learned to bring that same quality of attention into their homes, parishes, workplaces and friendships?

For Ken, Christ-Like Listening deepened faith by making it concrete. It connected Scripture with ordinary conversation and invited him to recognize that every encounter can become a place where the way of Christ is learned and lived.

LEARN TO BECOME A PRESENCE
