Stories of
Christ-Like Listening

NANCY ROBINSON VILLARROEL

Faith That Becomes a Practical Skill

“It went beyond the retreat to skill-building, so that you could actually help others.”

Nancy Robinson Villarroel had previously attended a short retreat with Fr. Dominic that helped bring her closer to God and, in a particular way, closer to Jesus. Christ-Like Listening attracted her because it promised to move beyond the experience of a retreat into the development of practical skills.

The formation continued to deepen Nancy's own spiritual life, but it also equipped her to accompany other people. This combination mattered to her. Personal growth and service were not treated as competing aims. The skills that help a person become more attentive to someone else also reveal patterns within the listener, inviting greater self-awareness and deeper faith.

At first, a formation spread across five days could appear daunting. Nancy discovered that the experience unfolded gradually. It was not composed of continuous lectures or an overwhelming volume of information. The rhythm moved among teaching, music, reflection, learning and reinforcement.

That variety allowed the content to settle. Participants did not simply receive an idea once and move immediately to the next subject. Important insights were revisited and strengthened, helping the learning become more practical and memorable.

The other participants were also part of the experience. Nancy valued meeting people and exchanging with them throughout the formation. Christ-Like Listening was therefore learned not only from the front of the room, but through the human encounters taking place within the group.

Nancy's story highlights why practical formation matters. Many people genuinely want to support others but are uncertain about how to do so without giving unwanted advice, taking control or becoming responsible for another person's decisions. Good intentions need to be joined with mature skills.

Christ-Like Listening offered Nancy a structured way of developing those skills while remaining rooted in relationship with Jesus. It helped her go deeper personally and gave her tools that could be carried into the service of others.
