Stories of
Christ-Like Listening

TALITHA LEMOINE

Trusting the Spirit in the Person Before Us

Consecrated virgin and Catholic missionary

“The Holy Spirit is dwelling in us—and guiding the person in front of us.”

Two elements of Christ-Like Listening stood out particularly clearly for Talitha Lemoine: its focus on a personal relationship with Jesus and its confidence in the presence of the Holy Spirit.

The formation reminded Talitha that the Holy Spirit dwells within the listener, but also within the person being heard. This creates a different foundation for christian peer-to-peer support. The person before us is not empty, abandoned or waiting for us to bring God into their life. God is already present and already at work within them.

The listener is therefore invited to trust. Rather than controlling the direction of the conversation or assuming responsibility for every outcome, the listener pays attention to the person and remains open to the guidance of the Spirit. This trust does not make listening passive. It gives the listener the freedom to be attentive without trying to become the other person's answer.

Talitha also appreciated that the seminar was not limited to instruction. Throughout the formation, Fr. Dominic created different opportunities for participants to encounter God and Jesus personally while they were learning. The spiritual experience and the practical learning supported one another.

This is important because Christ-Like Listening cannot be separated from the listener's own relationship with Christ. Techniques may improve a conversation, but the formation seeks something deeper: a listener whose presence is shaped by prayer, trust and awareness of God.

Talitha's brief testimony expresses a central conviction of the formation. Christian peer-to-peer support begins by recognizing that the Spirit is active on both sides of the encounter. The listener does not stand above the person who is speaking. Both remain before God, and both may be guided, challenged and renewed through the conversation.

LEARN TO BECOME A PRESENCE

Christ-Like Listening is not about having every answer. It is about learning to remain beside another person with faith, maturity and love.
